About the Podcast

AGI may arrive sooner than anyone expected—and it may arrive before we have a science capable of answering one of the most consequential questions it will raise: will it actually be conscious? How can we tell?

Final Enigma explores this question through conversations with leading scientists, philosophers, and thinkers working at the frontier of consciousness, intelligence, and AI. The podcast investigates what consciousness is, how it could be measured, and whether we could ever know with confidence if there is truly a ghost in the machine.

Why This Matters

Today, we have no definitive test for detecting consciousness. Consciousness remains deeply subjective, and there is not even a scientific consensus on what it fundamentally is.

As AI systems become increasingly intelligent, persuasive, and humanlike, when AGI arrives, this uncertainty could be dangerously destabilizing. People will form powerful beliefs about whether machines are conscious, whether they suffer, whether they deserve rights, and whether their claims about their own inner experience should be believed. We are already seeing how interactions with AI can reshape beliefs and, in some cases, contribute to psychological instability.

Before machines can convincingly claim to have minds of their own, we must develop scientific ways to investigate and validate machine consciousness. One of the most consequential questions humanity may face cannot be left to belief, intuition, or persuasion.

My goal is to interview key researchers in AI, neuroscience, and physics working at this intersection — the emerging science of machine consciousness.
